‘Classic Scottish noir bad food, bad moods, too much booze and tight plots’ @ey0k1, Twitter

For fans of Ian Rankin, Stuart McBride and Christopher Brookmyre, CULLEN YEAR ONE comprises the first four novels that featuring ambitious maverick Detective Constable Scott Cullen, whose series has set the bestseller charts alight.

GHOST IN THE MACHINE
With a messy divorce behind her, Caroline Adamson’s future is finally looking up. But after her mutilated body is found, police think Caroline’s ex-husband is the main suspect.

When one murder becomes three, Edinburgh faces up to the fact that it might have a serial killer in its midst. Then DC Scott Cullen of Lothian and Borders CID starts to question his superiors. Could the answer lie with Schoolbook, the latest social media craze to hit the city? Cullen has only been in the job for three months but he’s determined to prove himself, and equally as determined that the right person faces justice. As things take an even darker, personal turn, Cullen realises that he must look closer to home for the answer – before it’s too late.

A gritty, gripping and wholly satisfying modern crime novel, Ghost in the Machine asks the questions we don’t like to ask ourselves. Are we ever safe online, and how do we know who to trust?

DEVIL IN THE DETAIL
Still reeling from the death of a colleague on his watch, DC Scott Cullen finds himself caught in the cross-fire of competitive police politics when the body of Mandy Gibson, a young disabled girl, turns up in the affluent East Lothian town of Garleton.

The heartbroken parents don’t hesitate to point the finger of suspicion at young Jamie Cook, a tearaway teen with a long history of run-ins with the police. But where is he now? When the victim’s and the suspect’s families are revealed to belong to an offshoot group of the Catholic Church run by an excommunicated priest, Cullen quickly realises that the key to catching the killer is finding out the darkest secrets of this close-knit community, one family at a time.

From bestselling author Ed James, Devil in the Detail is a tightly woven, gripping crime novel set in a middle-class town that isn’t nearly as wholesome as it looks.

FIRE IN THE BLOOD
‘Cullen mesmerises again… Another amazing entry into the Cullen saga’ Jack McKnight, five-star review

DC Scott Cullen is disillusioned with the force and his insufferable boss, DI Bain, not least because he keeps being overlooked for a promotion. That is until he finds himself investigating not one but two decades-old cases when the mangled and unidentifiable body of a man is found in a barrel of aged Dunpender Distillery whisky.

The plot thickens when it is discovered that two men working at the distillery went missing within weeks of each other around the same time the barrel was filled nearly twenty years ago. As Cullen steps back in time to work out what happened, he finds himself steeped in twisted tales of family loyalties, lies and professional rivalries. But before Cullen can work out who the killer is, he needs to know whose body is in the barrel...

DYED IN THE WOOL
DC Scott Cullen likes to play hard and fast with the rules and while it might antagonise his colleagues – and superiors – it gets results. But resistance to his cowboy attitude, coupled with fears about a forthcoming police restructure, mean that things aren’t looking good for the maverick cop, especially when his personal life begins to crumble.

Then the body of a young man turns up in a totalled car in West Lothian. It looks like a straightforward case until that seemingly accidental death turns into two undeniable murders and Cullen gets caught in the risky crossfire of several different investigations. When the case shines a light on the murky underworld of football hooliganism, things become unexpectedly too personal for comfort. Can Cullen work out what’s going on, or were his colleagues right about him all along?

Anyone who likes English police procedurals and enjoys Ian Rankin, Jack and John Harvey, the Morse books etc., will find this author an excellent read. His characterisation is superb-we have all met or know these people and his plots are plausible. I cannot recommend him highly enough and have already pre-ordered his sixth volume in the series. May Ed James have a long and fruitful career. A MUST READ AUTHOR.

ED JAMES HAS A DOWN TO EARTH STYLE OF WRITING .CAN'T PUT THE STORY DOWN UNTIL TOALLY READ. ! REAL LIFE CHARACTER AND PLOTS IN ALL HIS BOOKS. KEEP THEM COMING !!!!!
Just finished the first book. It fairly clipped along. Both the story and the characters are superb. Bain is a great boss. I really enjoyed this book and have bought the others in the series. It makes a change to buy a book and enjoy it beginning to end.
I enjoyed these books and found Cullen preferable to other Scottish detectives in his moods. They were good to have on my app for reading when I found myself waiting.
Very addictive tartan noir! This is a must-read for any fans of Rankin, MacBride, Oswald, to name a few. Just the right balance between who dunnit and character development of the main characters. A strong character gallery, too. Excellent writing.
These stories have all the force and humor of the best British television crime series. The characters are well developed and down to earth. The mysteries are full of twists and turns that will keep you turning pages. Most enjoyable.
Ed James Year One reads like a made for TV series. The hero's persistence in separating the wheat from the chaff in an investigation is admirable, albeit he displeases a very well drawn Bain, a particularly odious villain. I enjoyed, even got addicted to the drama. The comments on football and the music scene were beyond me but that did mot deter from the enjoyment.
Very real, book, story, characters. I felt like I had entered another world involving a maturing young police officer the drama in and surrounding him. I was pleased to read the books in order and keep up with the story. I will continue to follow Ed James and all he writes. When you want to feel a place total immersion helps, I felt totally immersed into East Lothian Scotland and wanted to know more both about the people, location and lives. Well done.
Anyone who likes English police procedurals and enjoys Ian Rankin, Jack and John Harvey, the Morse books etc., will find this author an excellent read.
